Beaches Monitored More Efficiently with New Spectra Precision GNSS Receivers
Westminster, CO 17th March, 2015 -- When the beach authority of the Department of Environmental Protection of a major southern state in the US upgraded its field survey equipment with Spectra Precision GNSS receivers, efficiencies improved more than thirty percent.
The beach authority acquired a ProFlex 800 GNSS receiver, two EPOCH 50 GNSS receivers and two Ranger 3 data collectors to replace six aged Z-Xtreme GPS receivers. Now using the EPOCH 50 in RTK, a two-person crew is able to perform 20 to 22 beach profiles a day, replacing three-person teams that completed 13 to 15 profiles per day. In addition, using the ProFlex 800 for monument work with static occupation times of the standard 75 to 90 minutes, better solutions are expected, particularly working near tall beachfront buildings.
The beach authority monitors and sets survey control monuments and records beach profiles along hundreds of miles of beaches. Control monuments are established and maintained every one to two miles of coastline, and beach profiles are recorded approximately every 1000 feet. All data is maintained as a technical basis for permit review, establishment and restudy of coastal construction control lines and their administration; monitoring of shoreline changes, as well as providing a basis for assessing the need for beach restoration, nourishment, re-vegetation and other beach erosion control projects.
The beach authority first considered the Spectra Precision EPOCH 50 because a sister agency reported satisfaction with it and they were able to borrow and use one on a trial. The existing Ashtech Z-Xtremes, which had worked well for us for fourteen years were beginning to breakdown and were no longer serviceable. The authority required high accuracy and reliability in difficult weather conditions of heat, humidity and salt water. A one-month trial experience proved excellent, and the purchases were completed.
